Diamond Beach is a place that’ll make you wonder if you’ve stepped onto another planet. Blocks of glacial ice scatter across jet-black sand, glowing in the sun like oversized diamonds. It’s surreal and completely free to visit!

Yes, it’s a bit of a trek (around 5 hours from Reykjavík), but it’s 100% worth adding to your South Coast or Ring Road trip. Plus, Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is right across the road, so you can tick off two jaw-dropping stops in one go.

If Iceland’s on your list, this is the stop you don’t want to miss. Here’s everything to know before you go.

1. What Makes Diamond Beach So Special?

The magic here comes from glacial ice that breaks off Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier, drifts through the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, and eventually washes up on the black sand. The result? A beach scattered with icebergs that glisten like huge diamonds against the dark volcanic shore.

The ice can be anything from towering, jagged blue chunks to smaller, smooth pieces that look like giant crystals. And because the tides and weather change all the time, the beach always looks different.

One day, you might find massive icebergs stacked along the sand, and the next, it could be dotted with delicate shards catching the light. No two visits ever look the same!

2. How to Get There

🚗 By car: Diamond Beach is about 5 hours (380 km) from Reykjavík, and it’s super easy to find — it’s right off the Ring Road with clear signs. The drive along the South Coast is one of my favourites, packed with epic scenery like waterfalls, black sand beaches, and glaciers. You can break up the drive with a night in Vík, which I’d definitely recommend if you want a more relaxed trip.

🚌 By tour: If you don’t fancy driving, there are loads of guided tours that include Diamond Beach, Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, and other South Coast highlights.

    3. When’s the Best Time to Visit?

Summer: With long daylight hours and the magic of the midnight sun, summer’s an amazing time for photos; the golden skies later in the day make the icebergs look even more dreamy. The roads are clearer too, so it’s easier (and less stressful) to drive. Just expect more visitors, especially during the day.

Winter: If you’re after fewer crowds and a shot at seeing the northern lights, winter could be the time to go. The ice against a dramatic winter sky is pretty unreal. But driving can be challenging, snow, ice, and strong winds make the roads unpredictable. A guided tour would be a better (and safer) option if you’re visiting at this time of year.

The good news? The icebergs wash up all year round, so no matter when you visit, you’ll get to see Diamond Beach doing its thing.

    4. What’s Nearby?

✨ Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon – Literally right across the road from Diamond Beach. It’s where the icebergs gather before floating out to sea — you can’t miss it!
🥾 Skaftafell Nature Reserve – About an hour’s drive west. A brilliant spot for hikes, whether you fancy a short walk to Svartifoss waterfall or a longer trail with glacier views.
❄️ Ice Cave Tours (winter only) – Usually starting around Skaftafell or closer to Vatnajökull Glacier.
🧗 Glacier hikes – You can book these from Skaftafell too.

    5. Where To Stay

If you’re planning to stick around the area overnight (which I totally recommend, there’s so much to see nearby), here are a few great places to base yourself. Whether you’re after a bit of comfort, countryside charm, or somewhere to crash on a budget, there’s something for everyone:

🏨 Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon – Modern, comfy, and perfectly placed between Jökulsárlón and Skaftafell.
🏡 Hali Country Hotel – Cosy and welcoming, just 10 minutes from Diamond Beach.
🛏️ Vagnsstaðir HI Hostel – A budget-friendly pick with a glass dining room that’s perfect for watching the northern lights if they make an appearance.

    6. Diamond Beach Quick Tips

💸 Cost? Visiting Diamond Beach won’t cost you a thing — it’s totally free to wander along the shore and soak up the views. The only charge is for parking, which is about 1000 ISK (roughly £6 or $7). You can pay by card at the machine, so no need to stress about having cash on you.

📸 Photos? If you’re after those dreamy shots where the ice really sparkles, sunrise or sunset is your best bet. The soft, golden light at these times makes the contrast between the ice and the black sand even more striking. In summer, this can mean very late or very early, thanks to the midnight sun, but it’s worth setting that alarm!

🌊 Safety? The beach is beautiful, but the waves can be seriously powerful. Keep a safe distance from the water’s edge, and as tempting as it might be, don’t climb on the icebergs. They can be sharp, slippery, or even flip over unexpectedly — not worth the risk for a photo!

🦭 Wildlife? We were lucky enough to spot seals bobbing about just offshore. If you keep your eyes peeled, you might also spot other wildlife like seabirds, and on a really lucky day, even whales cruising by in the distance.

Final Thoughts: Is Diamond Beach Worth a Stop?

Absolutely, Diamond Beach is one of those spots that sticks with you long after your trip.

Whether you visit under the midnight sun or catch it with the northern lights dancing above, seeing those ice “diamonds” scattered across the black sand is something special.
